What is Ice Racing?

This coming Sat 21st January, the Xtreme International Ice Racing will be coming to Casper as part of their tour. The speedway bikes and four-wheels are modified to compete on ice indoors. With over 2000 metal studs added to the tires, they go from 0-60 in under 3 seconds. Oh and there are no brakes!

The Speedway bikes have the equivalent of 1200cc crotch rocket engine in a mountain bike frame. The four-stroke, four-valve engine running on race fuel revs up to 14,000 rpm. ” Four laps on a speedway bike compares to 10 minutes on a motocross bike. The power (90 horsepower at the back wheel) to weight ratio (the bikes weigh only 180 pounds) is something that cannot be explained. Each rider gears his bike differently with 60 to 80 toothed sprockets, which are nearly the size of the wheel itself.” 1

Each heat consists of four riders racing for points to qualify to the next level. There will be about twenty to twenty-five races total, depending on the total number of local riders. This is where you come in. Think you have what it takes to scream around on the ice?

This is posted on the Xtreme International Ice Racers Facebook page, “Don’t forget, that Extreme International Ice Racing will be running a 100 stud pit bike class at the Casper, WY round. Fremont Fiat!

Fremont Fiat!

Fremont Motors is now a Fiat Dealer

We are excited to announce that Fremont Motors will now carry a full line up of new Fiat Models. Fremont Fiat dealerships are in Casper, WY and Rock Springs WY. The first shipment arrived today. We received a white Fiat 500, a green 500L (which is a bigger version of the 500) and yellow 500L. A 124 Spider Classica, a 500X and a 500 Abarth are currently on the way. More vehicles will available as soon as they arrive.

Never heard of Fiat?

Fiat is an Italien car manufacturer that has been around Europe for donkeys with original Fiat 500s and has a cult following almost as big as Minis and VW campers.

The car was noted for having ‘suicide doors’. ‘Suicide Doors’ got that name because they opened the opposite way to most doors. Thankfully the new ones don’t have ‘suicide doors’ as this might be an issue in the Wyoming wind!

They are definitely fun quirky cars and its something that every gear head should drive at one point in their life.

Introduced in North America in 2011, Fiat brings, “simple, yet modern design, blending form and function beautifully”. 1

The Fiat 500 Abarth

The Fiat 500 Abarth is the sporty version with a 1.4 engine. Ok I know you are thinking, bah, a 1.4 engine in America, that tiny, but wait for it…it has a multi air turbo engine. The engine delivers 160hp and 170lb-ft of Torque. 183lb-ft torque in the automatic transmission version.

Twin intercoolers, bucket seats and a boost gauge to name a few of the cool features. 0-60mph in 6.9 seconds is pretty respectable for a car that can get up to 34mpg on the highway. Official figures can be found here.

So you like the style but need AWD. Yes. The Fiat 500X is available with an AWD option. This crossover has the option of a ‘Dynamic Selector’,

“The available Dynamic Selector Traction Control System helps you make the most of the road ahead with three customized modes for optimal performance. Auto is for routine everyday driving. Sport provides a sporty, more rapid driving response. Traction+ maximizes low-speed traction on low-friction and off-road surfaces, for when the road gets a little slick or bumpy.” 2

Vehicles start at $14,995.

Winter Vehicle Care Tips

Do You Need Snow Tires In Wyoming? Video

Do You Need Snow Tires In Wyoming?

It can snow for 7 maybe up to 8 months of the year depending on where you are. The question is, do you really need snow tires in Wyoming?

It doesn’t matter how good of a driver you are, in a split second, all four tires can lose traction and at 80mph that can be dang scary. Can snow tires save you?  What makes a snow tire so special?

Difference between summer tire tread and winter tire tread

Snow in a summer tire will stay in the grooves in the tread, thus compacting and making the surface area less between the rubber and the road. Snow is designed to be thrown out of the tread in winter tires whilst they are rotating. Just like wet tires are designed to move out water at a higher rate.

If you have ever watched formula one when there is a chance of heavy rain you’ll notice them swap out tires, or for the teams that decide not to put on tires for the wet…watch them fall behind or fall off the track.

Snow tires throw the snow out of the tread, creating more contact area between the rubber and road. This assists with traction and handling characteristics.

Studded winter tires are also available providing even more grip in ice.

The rubber

The deign of summer tire rubber compounds allows maximum traction in hot/warmer road conditions, but there has to be a compromise somewhere.

Summer tires are called that just for a reason. They don’t work very well in the winter.

Think of it as like driving on just your rims with no tires. They become hard and don’t respond. Steering and braking, or just about anything becomes more difficult.

Snow Tire

Regular driving is possible, but the chances of less control are higher.  A softer rubber compound is used in winter or snow tires, designed to stay softer in much colder temperatures, giving you better traction and handling.

You could get away with having summer tires or better all-terrain tires your wheels will still turn, however, if you want your vehicle to be safer, handle better and get more traction then snow tires are recommended.

Choosing snow tires

There are so many different types of snow or winter tires made for different snow conditions and temperature fluctuations. Different tread patterns and rubber compounds are available at different prices.

When it comes to tires, you get what you pay for. Talk to your local dealership about which ones would suit your vehicle best for the conditions of where you are. Check their website for coupons and offers.

So, snow tires are not going to stop you from wrecking or sliding in the snow/ice. They will greatly improve your chances of not sliding in the first place.

Snow tire markings

How do you know if you have a snow or winter tire?

Various tire manufacturers will have slightly different markings. Look for markings on the side of the tire that say M+S (mud and snow) M/S, or MS.

A Mountain symbol with a snowflake inside indicates the tire is tested in snow and meets the minimum requirements for performance on snow.  (3PMSF-3 Peak Mountain Snow Flake)

Do you need snow tires in Wyoming?

This really depends on your own unique circumstances. Driving a RWD sports car through winter in Wyoming,  you’re definitely going to need some snow tires. Live in the boonies, where the roads don’t get plowed? You’re probably going to need snow tires. Have a 4×4 and live in the town where they plow roads regularly, you might not need some. They aren’t the cheapest investment, but definitely safer in the snow.

Which brand/model or winter tire is your favorite?
