What is Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on a Volkswagen?
Photo: Volkswagen
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are systems within a car or SUV that allows seamless smartphone integration. Apple smartphones can be plugged in directly to the vehicle via a USB cable and the system will automatically identify the phone. Android smartphones will require downloading the Android Auto app on your smartphone first. This eliminates complicated set-ups. It is much easier and more user-friendly to use than a Bluetooth system for hands-free calling.
Hands-free calling can be done without the need to ‘pair’ a phone. Contacts can be loaded from your phone to the vehicle and voice commands used to dial numbers. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto also allow the use of certain Apps (Applications) from your smartphone. The ability to view and use navigation is huge. This effectively wipes out the need for an expensive built-in navigation system in the vehicle.
Other apps compatible with the system include messaging. Text messages can be received and relayed through the cars sound system. Responses can also be made using voice commands through Siri or Google Assistant. Music can also be streamed through the system using apps such as Pandora, Spotify or music within the smartphone device itself.
There are hundreds of Android Auto compatible apps to choose from. Apple has a fair selection of frequently used apps available. Both systems allow integration with manufacturer apps too.
Colbey Day from Fremont Volkswagen in Casper, Wyoming gives a quick demonstration in this video.

Hunger in Wyoming affects more people than you might think
According to FeedingAmerica, 73,830 people in Wyoming are struggling with hunger. 23,500 of those are children. This equates to 1 in 6 children in Wyoming struggling with hunger. The Wyoming Food Bank of the Rockies says that homeless people account of for only 10% of their food recipients. The rest are everyday people.

2019 Chevrolet Silverado Adds 2.7L Turbo Engine Choice
The Chevy Silverado engine choices include a 4.3L V6 EcoTec3, a 5.3L V8 EcoTec3, and the 6.2L V8 EcoTec3. Now, the 4 cylinder, 2.7L turbo engine will replace the 4.3L V6. This will now be the standard engine option on the 2019 Silverado 1500 on LT and RST trim levels.

Benefits of the 2.7L turbo engine
Better fuel economy
The turbocharged inline 4 will add better fuel economy than the 4.3L V6. Although official EPA fuel economy figures are not yet available on their website. Chevy said in their press release, estimates are around 23 mpg on the highway for two-wheel drive models. There is no mention of four-wheel drive fuel economy yet.
Lighter
The overall weight of the truck is reduced, compared to the 4.3L (380 lbs less). Construction consists of an aluminum block and cylinder head along with aluminum alloy pistons (with cast iron ring groove). The crankshaft and connecting rods are made of forged steel. Production of the engine will be at the General Motors Spring Hill facility in Tennessee.

Performance
More horsepower and torque is available. Power output for the 2.7L turbo engine is 310 hp and 348 lb-ft torque. This is 25 more horsepower and 43 lb-ft more torque than the 4.3L. 0-60 mph times, Chevy says is less than 7 seconds.
Turbocharged engines perform better at altitude
“The high-altitude performance of a turbocharged engine is significantly better”, says BorgWarner. “…the power loss of a naturally aspirated engine is considerable.” Something to consider when living in a Rocky Mountain state such as Wyoming or Colorado.
Transmission
This time, the engine is paired with a Hydra-Matic 8-speed automatic transmission, versus a 6-speed automatic.
Dual-volute turbocharger
Chevrolet says this 2.7L turbo engine is specifically designed for truck use. The dual-volute system allows the turbine to spool up faster creating more boost, and thus, increased lower end torque.
Start/Stop Technology
Standard on most new vehicles now. The Start/Stop system shuts off the engine when the vehicle is stationary. For example, whilst waiting at a stop light, the engine will stop (accessories will still run, such as the radio). When the driver removes their foot off the brake pedal, the engine re-starts. This helps save on fuel and emissions.

Trunk or Treat Ideas
Trunk or treat events are basically tailgate parties for kids adults or both for fall festivals and Halloween. According to Wikipedia, “Some parents regard trunk-or-treating as a safer alternative to trick-or-treating”. Here are some trunk or treat ideas that might help get those creative juices flowing. I did notice on my hunt for cool inspirational photos, there was a lack of decorated pickup trucks.
If you have or are planning to decorate your pickup truck, send us your pics! Locations of some events around Wyoming are listed below.

What is the Cargo Camera?
I remember a few years ago getting in a RAM 2500, driving it back from Douglas, WY seeing an option on the screen for Cargo Cam. Even though the name is pretty self-explanatory, like a child I had to play and see it for myself. So I selected the option on the touch screen and boom… a perfectly clear image of inside the truck bed appeared on the screen. Thinking to myself, wow, how cool is that and why has it taken so long for manufacturers to do this. It just seems such an obvious tool to have. The official name from RAM Trucks, is a ‘Center High-Mount Stop Lamp W/Cargo View Camera’.
Where is the camera mounted?
The cargo camera is mounted on the back of the cab, where the 3rd brake light (Center High-Mount Stop Lamp) would normally be. The whole unit is replaced with one which has the camera, brake lights and some extra white lights that point down into the bed. Adding this along with the LED bed rail lights means you can also see your cargo at night time. This camera is available on the RAM heavy duty trucks with the 8.4″ UConnect touchscreen.
Top 5 reasons you might want a cargo camera
1. Hooking up a trailer to your truck.
I’ve been told that if you have been backing up 5th wheels or gooseneck trailers for years, you don’t need a camera to know where the hitch is. It sure is handy though. It does make the process faster and easier for someone who is not used to hooking up trailers on a regular basis. Sometimes, we don’t always have an extra person nearby to help guide us either. On newer RAM trucks, both the backup camera and cargo camera images appear on the large 8.4″ touch screen so you can toggle between the two, making it even easier.

2. Check for loose cargo.
You have a truck, you do truck things with it. How often have you packed stuff in the bed and are constantly checking the mirrors to see if a bag is about to launch like a rocket from the bed to the road or even vehicle behind? You are able to turn on the camera whilst driving to able to see what is going on in the bed. No need to ask passengers to look behind or even try it yourself whilst driving.

3. Watching the dog(s).
Everybody wants to know mans best friend is safe and happy in the back. Hopefully not trying to take a giant leap for dogkind out the box.
4. It looks better than the stock brake light.
With 6 red LED lights on the top (for the brake light) and 4 white LEDs on either side of the camera, it looks better than the stock brake light and also lights up more. Cargo could potentially block the bed rail lighting, so by having both of these lighting options available on your RAM will help in several different scenarios.

5. Car wash.
Yesterday, I pulled up to the car wash and almost drove in before forgetting to check the bed. Ok, so it might be complete laziness but, if I had a cargo camera, I could have checked real quick. Instead, I had to embarrassingly pull over at the car wash, get out and check if there anything in there. There was. With no room left in the cab to move all my junk in there. So… on my merry way with a dirty truck, I went. If I did make it into the car wash, I could have watched the swirly brushes and jet sprays clean the bed of the truck, on my screen using the rear cargo camera.
How much is the cargo camera on a RAM Truck?
Center High-Mount Stop Lamp W/Cargo View Camera is what Ram officially call it as mentioned before. It’s a $345 add-on from the factory. When you consider a littering fine in WY can be up to $750, this seems cheap. Much more likely to be just plain right useful for that amount though.
What do you think? Would a Cargo Camera be useful for you? Do you already have one, do you use it, like it, hate it, love it? Let us know, comment below.
