When it comes to value for money in a sports car, there are several important factors to consider. Weight, handling, and technology are a few of those, but to some, the most important number is horsepower.
How we calculated which car has the most horsepower per dollar
Our methodology for this calculation is to divide the base MSRP figure (the least expensive configuration of the vehicle) from the manufacturer and divide that by the horsepower. For example, if the MSRP is $30,000 and the horsepower is 300, $30,000 divided by 300 gives us $100/horsepower. Rebates, discounts, and other fees are not included as they can change.
Cars on the list are all cars that are marketed as sports cars and have at least 300hp. Luxury sedans are not included in this list.
Here is our list starting from the most horsepower per dollar for 2019 model year sports cars.
1. Ford Mustang GT
Offering the most horsepower per dollar, number 1 on our list is the Ford Mustang GT. A base price of $35,355 MSRP gets you a 5.0L V8 that puts out 460hp. That price includes the 6-speed manual transmission and puts the vehicle at $76.86 per horsepower.
2. Dodge Charger R/T Scat Pack
Equipped with the 392 SRT HEMI V8, this 2019 Dodge Charger puts out a very strong 485hp, making it the best 4 door muscle car when it comes to horsepower per dollar. Prices start at $40,245 MSRP for this Charger.
3. Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack
Technically in second place equal as horsepower and price are exactly the same as the Charger, but if you’d rather have the 2 door version here it is. A Challenger R/T Scat Pack with the 392 SRT HEMI gives 485hp for a starting price of $40,245 MSRP.
4. Chevrolet Camaro 6.2L V8
In 4th place comes the Chevy Camaro equipped with the 6.2L V8 DI engine. Available with a base model package and the 455hp 6.2L gives this car a solid place on our list of cars with the most horsepower per dollar. Starting price with this engine and a 6-speed manual transmission puts it at $37,995 MSRP.
5. Chevrolet Camaro 3.6 V6
Even the Camaro with the 3.6L V6 is a still great buy when it comes to the most horsepower per dollar. With 335hp and a price tag starting at only $27,990 MSRP, this Camaro works out only 4c difference per horsepower compared to the V8.
6. Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat
Looking for insane amounts of horsepower to go to work smelling like burnt rubber? The Challenger Hellcat, even with its $60,945 MSRP price tag offers a lot of horsepower per dollar. 2019 model years get an increase in 10 horsepower bringing the Hellcat up to 717hp from the supercharged 6.2L V8 Hemi.
7. Ford Mustang Fastback
With 310hp from the 2.3L EcoBoost engine in the Mustang and a starting price of $26,395, the Mustang Fastback is one of the most affordable sports cars when it comes to horsepower per dollar.
