Volkswagen announces they will bringing another vehicle to their SUV lineup. Called the Taos, the compact SUV will fit in below the Tiguan. Volkswagen Taos is 11-inches shorter than the Tiguan with a total length of 174.2 inches.
Summer 2021 is when Volkswagen says the vehicle is to debut. Available in FWD and AWD. Volkswagen Taos models will feature a new 1.5-liter turbocharged engine making 158 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque.
Featuring Volkswagen’s modified version of the Miller Cycle, this new SUV is expected to produce outside fuel economy. Paired with an 7-speed DSG automatic transmission, AWD models will also feature a dual-clutch.
“While electric vehicles are stealing the headlines these days, we are continuing to make great strides with technology on our internal combustion engines,” said Johan de Nysschen, Chief Operating Officer, Volkswagen Group of America. “The new 1.5-liter engine in the Taos uses the latest advances in gasoline-engine design to bring outstanding fuel economy to the compact SUV segment. The Taos will provide a further proof point for the ability of the Volkswagen North American Region to deliver the right products for our market requirements.”
Why the name Taos?
Taos is a town in New Mexico with over 400 years of history, and home to 6,000 people and a 1,000-year-old Native American community. Also, know for an artist community and world-class ski resort. Spectacular landscape views include the Rio Grande Gorge. A small town with a rich history and culture is the inspiration for the VW Taos.
“We are excited that Volkswagen has named their sport utility vehicle after the town of Taos,” said Taos Mayor Dan Barrone. “It’s a great opportunity for our community to share its rich history and culture alongside Volkswagen with its unique and rich history and culture.”
An engineer turned mechanic, John Muir, who wrote several guides on how to repair Volkswagen’s, also lived in Taos.
