Are you looking for a car or SUV that is protected by a bumper to bumper warranty? Do you live in the Rocky Mountain Region or somewhere it snows a lot? Maybe you just like driving in the mountains or like the added safety benefits of having an AWD or 4×4. In that case, you might be looking for new SUVs Under $25000 with AWD or 4×4 capabilities. Here’s a list of some of the new vehicles that meet that criteria for 2018/19
SUVs under $25000 with AWD or 4×4
Jeep Renegade
This subcompact crossover from Jeep came out in 2015 and is a popular choice in the Rocky Mountain region. In fact, this little 4×4 is the 9th most popular vehicle overall for the state of Wyoming. Beaten only by trucks and the Subaru Outback. The 2018 Jeep Renegade trim levels include; Sport, Upland (limited edition), Latitude, Altitude, Limited, and Trailhawk (off-road edition). 4×4 Renegades have 8.0″ of ground clearance (Trailhawk is 8.7″). The ‘Sport’ trim level in 4×4 starts at $21,595 MSRP* with the 1.4L turbocharged engine and a manual transmission. Adding the bigger 2.4L engine and the 9-Speed auto transmission brings it up to $22,925 MSRP*. Of course, the final price depends on packages on options that can be added to the vehicle. Higher trim levels may also fall under the 25k mark depending on options.
The Jeep Selec-Terrain system adds 4 driving modes that include; Auto, Snow, Sand, and Mud (Trailhawk adds a rock mode). Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are optional on the Sport model and standard on Latitude, Limited and Trailhawk models.

Fiat 500X
The Fiat 500X hit the U.S. market in 2016. Although the Fiat 500X shares the same engine choices as the Jeep Renegade (owned by the same company), the Fiat’s styling definitely stands out. Rounder shapes give it the ‘Fiat’ look, however, this could compromise interior space if you need it. Equipped with AWD, the 2.4L engine and the 9-speed automatic transmission, fuel economy estimates are at 29 mpg on the highway, 21 mpg in the city and 24mpg combined. AWD models with the Dynamic Selector means you can choose drive modes such as; Auto, All-Weather, and Sport. All-weather mode increases traction, whilst Sport mode increase steering feedback and changes transmission shift points. Trim levels are; Pop, Pop Blue Sky Edition, Trekking, Urbana Edition, and Lounge. Ground clearance is an impressive 7.9″ of ground clearance. The Fiat 500X in AWD starts at $23,890 MSRP*.
Ford EcoSport
The Ford EcoSport has been around in other parts of the world for some time, but it’s new to the U.S. market for 2018. It joins our list of SUVs Under $25000 with AWD or 4×4. A subcompact crossover SUV that is available with a 2.0L engine and intelligent 4WD. It also has the option to mount the spare tire on the rear swing-door style tailgate. Trim levels include; S, SE, Titanium, and SES. Available features include Apple CarPlay and Android for seamless smartphone integration, keyless entry, and B&O premium audio. Ground clearance is 7.8″. EPA fuel economy ratings for the AWD are 29 mpg on the highway, 23 mpg in the city, and 25 mpg combined. Prices start at $21,590 MSRP* for the AWD EcoSport S.
Volkswagen Tiguan Limited
Not to be confused with the new Tiguan from Volkswagen, this is the original shape Tiguan, renamed to the Tiguan Limited. This compact crossover is available with VW’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system. The 2.0 L engine puts out around 200hp. Paired with a 6-speed auto transmission, fuel economy is rated at 25 mpg on the highway, 19 mpg in the city and combined at 22 mpg. Standard features include a color infotainment system with Bluetooth and back up camera. A premium package can be added to have a bigger touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It comes in one trim level with the price just a smidge over the 25K mark at $25,125 MSRP* when equipped with 4Motion. To top it all, the Tiguan Limited comes with a 6 year/ 72,000-mile bumper-to-bumper and powertrain warranty!
Chevrolet Trax
A subcompact crossover SUV that comes standard with a whopping 10 airbags. Trim levels include; LS, LT, and Premier. Powered by a 1.4L turbo engine, and paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The base model LS comes with features such as Halogen headlamps, Chevy 7″ My Link color touchscreen, and remote keyless entry. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility for smartphones is also included. 4G LTE Wi-Fi is available. Fuel economy is rated at 30 mpg on the highway, 24 mpg in the city and combined at 27 mpg for the AWD. The Chevy Trax gets an overall 5/5 safety rating from the NHTSA. Prices start at $23,495 MSRP* for the 2018 Trax in AWD.
Jeep Compass
The Jeep Compass gets an all-new design for 2018. A compact crossover SUV it is a class size bigger than the Renegade. The 2.4L engine can be paired with either a 6-speed manual or 9-speed automatic. Trims include; Sport, Latitude, Altitude, Limited, and Trailhawk (off-road version). The Sport trim comes with 16″ wheels wrapped in all-season tires, 5″ color touchscreen and remote keyless entry as standard. The Latitude trim adds automatic headlamps. The last on our list of SUVs Under $25000 with AWD or 4×4. The Jeep Compass starts at $22,595 MSRP* in a 4×4 Sport trim.
Other vehicles to consider
Some close but not quite exact matches would include the Volkswagen SportWagen and Volkswagen Alltrack. These aren’t technically SUVs, they are wagons, but can both be had with AWD. The SportWagen can be had for under $25k, whilst the Alltrack with a higher trim, more ground clearance, and off-road ruggedness might be a tad over the 25k mark. The Subaru Forester and Crosstrek can both come in under budget. The Ford Escape, Jeep Cherokee, Chevrolet Equinox, and Dodge Journey (3rd-row seats) may come in under budget depending on rebates or offers from the manufacturer.
