Electric Car Charging Station Now at Fremont Motors Casper

Electric Car Charger Casper

According to the Alternative Fuels Data Center, America has 43,292 electric car charging outlets available to the public. 67 of those are in Wyoming, spread across 32 charging stations. Those numbers are most likely changing all the time, as more and more outlets are being fitted, and some aren’t even on that list yet.

Fremont Motors Fiat, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, RAM in Casper has just had two outlets fitted. One for public use and one for the shop.

These chargers were fitted as a requirement to sell the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, which the dealership had had requests for. Dealership staff including service, parts are sales also had to complete extra training requirements for the Hybrid Pacifica and the Fiat 500e.

There are 4 different types of electric vehicles. Some have gas engines and batteries, some recharge themselves, some are plug-ins.

  • HEV- Hybrid Electric Vehicle
  • PHEV- Plug-In Hybrid Vehicle
  • BEV- Battery Electric Vehicle
  • REEV- Range Extended Electric Vehicle

The Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid is a Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle. This means it has a gas (internal combustion engine) and a battery. PHEVs are charged via plugging to a power outlet, also by their engine and regenerative braking. The advantage of this type in Wyoming is that if you are traveling a long distance and there aren’t enough charging stations along the way, the regular engine is there too. The Fiat 500e is a BEV, meaning there is no internal combustion engine. It never needs gasoline. The range of the Fiat 500e is approximately 80 miles per charge.

Charging

There are level 1 and level 2 chargers. A Level 1 charge is using a standard 110/120v 20-amp outlet, such as at a house. On the Fiat 500e, this takes about 23 hrs and is intended for occasional or emergency use. Let’s face it, 23hrs isn’t exactly practical either, so let’s move on. Level 2 charging is using a single-phase AC 208/240v 30A charger. This is what has been installed at the Fremont Motors dealership in Casper. Charging time on Level 2 is 4hrs for the Fiat 500e and 2hrs for the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid.

Rocky Mountain Power received a $4million grant from the U.S Dept of Energy to outfit 1500 miles of highway with electric charging stations. Part of that plan is on I-80 in Wyoming.

Who can use the EV Charger at Fremont Motors?

If you have a Plug-In Hybrid, Battery Electric or Range Extended Electric Vehicle you are welcome to come charge it.

What does it cost?

It is free.

Do I need to make an apt?

No. However sometimes there may be a car parked in that spot so might be an idea to call ahead anyway.

Does it work for all electric vehicles?

It will work for most plug-in electric vehicle except Teslas.

Are hybrid vehicles taxed in Wyoming?

Yes. Wyoming is one of the few states that has a charge (no pun intended) for owning a plug-in electric vehicle, a $50 fee (House Bill no HB0009). There are, however, Federal tax credits available on new hybrid vehicle purchases. The Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid and Fiat 500e both look like they qualify for the maximum of up to $7500 in tax credits. At this moment in time, the Fiat 500e is only available new from CA and OR. The Pacifica you can get in Casper.  This credit ends when 200,000 eligible hybrid vehicles are sold.
