2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid Named Rocky Mountain Auto Car of the Year

Rocky Mountain Automotive Press Association (RMAP) journalists name the 2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid Car of the Year.

Usually, these awards are presented at the Denver Auto Show. Although the show is currently postponed due to COVID-19, RMAP journalists still picked out their favorite vehicles.

“As the voting finished up for the Rocky Mountain Automotive Press (RMAP) vehicle of the year we were thrilled to have the 2020 Toyota Corolla LE Hybrid come out on top. Taking an iconic name like Corolla and offering a hybrid that can get over 50 miles per gallon put this vehicle on top for this year in the sedan category in the Rocky Mountain Region.”

RMAP President

2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid

Corolla has been around for 24 years and is the world’s best selling nameplate. Now in its 12th generation, the Toyota Corolla sedan is an all-new design for 2020. Along with a new design also comes a hybrid model with a new-generation Hybrid Synergy Drive.

Fuel Economy

Probably the main reason you’d be looking at a hybrid vehicle is the superior fuel economy. Here are the EPA estimated fuel economy numbers for the 2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid;

52 mpg on the highway, 53 mpg in the city and 52 mpg combined.

Fun Fact:

You may be wondering why the city mpg is higher than the highway. During city driving, there’s typically more start-stop and slow speed driving, which means the car can run on the battery and not the engine.

According to fueleconomy.gov, the range of the Corolla Hybrid on a full tank of gas (which would cost approx $23 at the moment) is 593 miles. To put that in perspective, that’s enough to drive across the state of Wyoming (Cheyenne to Yellowstone) and still have over 100 miles left in the tank.

Normal, Sport and ECO driving modes are available. Exact fuel consumption will depend on your own driving circumstances. How much is costs to fill the tank will obviously also depend on fuel prices.

Do you need to plug in a 2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid?

No. The 2020 Toyota Corolla is a hybrid, which means it has an internal combustion engine (a 1.8L 4 cylinder), an electric motor and a hybrid battery. Simply through driving the car, it is able to charge itself.
